There are many homonyms in the Japanese language. Homonyms refer to the words that have the same reading with different meanings. Some of the homonyms are difficult to differentiate. In particular, the word “かえる(Kaeru)”, which is often used in daily life, can be written in 4 different kanji. I’m sure many of you have had the experience of wondering which one to use. So in this article, I will explain the difference, meaning and usage of 変える・替える・換える・代える (all are read as Kaeru).
変える
変える means “to change” when translated to English. 変える means to change the state of something from before or to move something to a different position or place. It means to change or to alter.
Example
コロナの影響でオリンピックの日取りが変わった。
ころなのえいきょうでおりんぴっくのひどりがかわった。
Corona no eikyo de Olympic no hidori ga kawatta.
The date of the Olympics was changed due to Covid-19.
髪の毛を切ったら印象が変わった。
かみのけをきったらいんしょうがかわった。
Kaminoke o kittara insho ga kawatta.
When I cut my hair, my impression changed.
替える
替える means “to replace” and it is to make something different from what it was before. It means to replace with something else entirely, rather than changing the state.
Example
家が古くなったので立て替える。
いえがふるくなったのでたてかえる。
Ie ga hurukunattanode tatekaeru.
The house was replaced because it was too old.
スマホの容量を大きい物に替える。
すまほのようりょうをおおきいものにかえる。
Sumaho (A shortened word for smartphone) no yoryo o ooki mono ni kaeru.
I replaced my phone with a larger capacity.
電球を新しいものに替える。
でんきゅうをあたらしいものにかえる。
Denkyu o atarashi mono ni kaeru.
I replaced the light bulb with a new one.
換える
換える means “to exchange” and it is to obtain something equivalent in exchange for something else. This word is often used when the value of what you are giving up is equal to the value of what you are getting.
Example
旅行に行くので円をポンドに換える。
りょこうにいくのでえんをぽんどにかえる。
Ryoko ni iku node en o pondo ni kaeru.
I'm going on a trip, so I'm converting yen into pounds.
いらなくなったものをお金に換える。
いらなくなったものをおかねにかえる。
Iranakunattamono o okane ni kaeru.
Convert things you no longer need into money.
難しい言葉を簡単なものに言い換える。
むずかしいことばをかんたんなものにいいかえる。
Muzukashi kotoba o kantan na mono ni iikaeru.
Rephrase difficult words into simple ones.
代える
代える means “to substitute” and is to let something else take the role.
Example
アレルギーがあれば、小麦粉の代わりに米粉を使ってパンを作る。
あれるぎーがあれば、こむぎこのかわりにこめこをつかってぱんをつくる。
Allergy ga areba komugiko no kawari ni komeko o tsukatte pan o tsukuru.
If you are allergic, use rice flour instead of wheat flour to make bread.
上司の代わりに会議に出席する。
じょうしのかわりにかいぎにしゅっせきする。
Joshi no kawari ni kaigi ni shusseki suru.
Attend meetings on behalf of your boss.
